PLN EPI Turns to Blue Carbon as Core of Its Decarbonisation Strategy

PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), the primary energy procurement arm of state utility PLN, held an internal webinar on 22 May 2026 to sharpen its nature-based decarbonisation approach. The online session — designated “HSSE Talk #4” and framed around International Biodiversity Day 2026 — was attended by management and staff across the PLN EPI Group, with a stated theme of unlocking blue carbon ecosystem potential for emissions reduction.

Muhammad Aminuddin, Vice President for Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (K3KL) at PLN EPI, argued that the company’s coastal facility footprint gives it a direct stake in protecting mangrove forests and seagrass beds, which he described as natural carbon sinks capable of sequestering carbon up to ten times more effectively than land-based forests. He positioned growing domestic carbon market activity alongside tightening regulation and rising investor pressure as reasons for PLN EPI to pursue what he termed a “nature-positive strategy” as a core business pillar — not merely a compliance add-on — in support of Indonesia’s 2060 net-zero commitment.

Farhan Prastiyan, Senior Business Development Manager at CarbonEthics, co-presented, highlighting mangrove rehabilitation and peatland conservation as pathways that can simultaneously expand carbon sequestration and generate blue economy livelihoods for coastal communities. The two organisations are already collaborating on a mangrove rehabilitation project at Tanjung Pakis in Karawang Regency, where PLN EPI says local residents are being engaged through skills training, support for micro and small enterprises, and ecotourism development.
