Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry and Emergent Forest Finance Accelerator, Inc. signed a cooperative understandingon the margins of London Climate Action Week 2026, with both sides committing to structured dialogue on mobilising international climate finance for Indonesia’s forest sector. Jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD+) was identified as the primary mechanism under exploration.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni cited Indonesia’s demonstrated performance under the World Bank-supported Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) — through which the country has secured USD 110 million in climate finance tied to verified emission reductions — as the foundation for pursuing new results-based payment arrangements and additional high-integrity financing schemes. He also signalled that Indonesia is actively reforming its national carbon market governance, developing the credible, transparent, and accountable infrastructure needed to attract international investment and ensure genuine environmental and social benefits reach forest communities.
Emergent President and CEO Eron Bloomgarden affirmed his organisation’s support for Indonesia’s JREDD+ ambitions, describing the country’s vast tropical forest estate as presenting an opportunity to reduce emissions at jurisdictional scale while protecting biodiversity and the livelihoods of forest-dependent populations. Both parties characterised the signed document as a framework for continued, constructive discussion on financing opportunities and mobilisation strategies rather than the conclusion of any specific transaction.
Carbon Market Context
- Indonesia’s push to formalise a jurisdictional-scale forest carbon finance partnership places it within the broader Asia-Pacific dynamic where sovereign-backed REDD+ supply — large in volume and, when well-governed, high in integrity — remains one of the most closely watched potential sources for voluntary carbon market buyers seeking credible, nature-based offsets.
