Vietnam’s largest dairy producer, Vinamilk, presented its greenhouse gas reduction record at the National Forum on Environment and Climate 2026, jointly organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and Nghe An Province under the theme “From Policy to Action.” The company was the sole dairy enterprise invited to speak on the GHG abatement panel. A senior Climate Change Department official, Nguyen Tuan Quang, noted that 2,166 facilities now carry a statutory obligation to report emissions, and the 110 largest have been assigned quota caps collectively representing roughly 40% of the country’s total direct emissions.
The forum came as Vietnam prepares to launch a pilot carbon trading exchange. Vinamilk Net Zero Project Lead and Executive Director of Manufacturing Le Hoang Minh said the company’s practice of conducting systematic GHG inventories well before mandatory deadlines has positioned it favourably ahead of quota-based trading. Vinamilk has registered Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-aligned goals, and selected facilities — including a factory and farm in Nghe An, the host province — have attained carbon-neutral certification under ISO 14068-1 covering Scopes 1 and 2.
Le Hoang Minh described specific operational measures and their measured results: four automated smart warehouses that cut approximately 1,900 tonnes of CO₂ per year while consuming around 70% less energy than diesel-driven and conventional warehouse systems; solar water heating for farm sanitation that avoids roughly 278 tCO₂e annually; and a series of packaging redesigns — including thinner-walled yogurt drink bottles, optimised plastic straws, and redesigned export-product caps — that together trim an estimated 135 tCO₂e and eliminate use of 48 tonnes of virgin plastic each year. He emphasised that each initiative also delivers direct operating cost reductions, framing early emissions action as financially self-reinforcing rather than purely a compliance obligation.
