JBE and Tohoku University’s ANEMONE Network Launch Joint Trial to Measure Blue Carbon’s Biodiversity Value

The Japan Blue Economy Technology Research Association JBE has begun a joint demonstration project with ANEMONE, a biodiversity observation network organized by Tohoku University, to visualize the ecological and ecosystem value generated alongside blue carbon projects.

The initiative aims to move blue carbon evaluation beyond CO2 absorption volumes alone, adding a “nature positive” dimension that captures how conservation, restoration and sustainable use of coastal ecosystems contribute to broader ecological gains. JBE frames this as a step toward making the full value created by blue carbon activities more visible to stakeholders, not just its carbon-sequestration metric.

The announcement is brief and does not yet specify a methodology, timeline, or which coastal sites will be involved in the trial.
