Indonesia and Verra Partner to Fast-Track Forest Carbon Credits Under New Ministerial Regulation

Indonesia’s government, forestry-sector businesses, and international carbon standards body Verra have agreed to deepen cooperation on high-integrity forestry carbon credits following enactment of Minister of Forestry Regulation No. P.6/2026. Indonesia’s Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo — also described in the report as a former Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs — said at a Jakarta briefing that the new rule gives Indonesia a clearer legal foundation for expanding offset-based forestry carbon trade. An Indonesian delegation met Verra representatives on 15 May to discuss reinforcing the country’s standing as one of the world’s largest holders of forest carbon potential and to widen green-investment opportunities tied to sustainable forest management.

The Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association (APHI) disclosed that 16 of its member companies’ carbon projects have been placed in a fast-track category for credit trading under Verra’s scheme. APHI Chairman Soewarso called on Verra to accelerate verification, validation, and credit-issuance processes while remaining within the P.6/2026 procedural framework, and reported steadily growing member appetite for Verra-based forestry projects as Indonesia’s voluntary carbon market matures.

Verra’s Senior Director of Sustainable Development, Programme Development & Innovation, Sinclair Vincent, welcomed the regulation as an important milestone for voluntary carbon development in Indonesia, confirmed Verra’s commitment to speeding up its certification pipeline, and said Verra is actively seeking recognition of its methodologies from the ICVCM (Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market) to reinforce global market integrity. Both parties identified human-capacity building as a shared priority for ensuring Indonesian credits attain international quality and integrity standards.
